Seitan Bolognese
This Seitan Bolognese is a hearty, plant-based twist on the classic dish. Minced seitan is simmered with vegetables, crushed tomatoes, and herbs to create a rich, savory sauce, perfect for pairing with your favorite pasta. A delicious and protein-packed alternative to traditional Bolognese!
- 1 package of Franklin Farms Minced Seitan
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1/2 cup vegetable broth
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- 1/4 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
- Fresh basil (optional, for garnish)
- Cooked pasta (spaghetti, rigatoni, or your favorite)
1. Cook the vegetables: Heat olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened.
2. Add the seitan: Stir in the minced seitan and cook for another 3 minutes.
3. Build the sauce: Add the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute, stirring it into the vegetables and seitan. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and vegetable broth, and stir to combine. Add the oregano, basil, thyme, salt, pepper, and sugar (if using). Mix everything well.
4. Simmer the sauce: Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Let it cook for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld together. If the sauce gets too thick, add vegetable broth or water to adjust the consistency.
5. Serve: Serve the Bolognese sauce over your favorite cooked pasta. Garnish with fresh basil, if desired.
